History & origin

Corgi — where the breed comes from

The Welsh Corgi is the British royal family's official breed, originating from Wales with a history going back 1000 years. "Corgi" means "small dog" in Welsh, and there is a romantic legend about their origin — it is said that Corgis were the mounts of fairies and elves, and the colour variations on their backs are the "saddle marks of the fairy mounts".

There are two kinds of Corgi: the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, with the Pembroke being the most common. They were originally cattle-herding dogs, and with their low stature and agile movement they could weave between the cows' legs and nip at their heels to direct the herd.

The Corgi became famous worldwide thanks to Queen Elizabeth II — the Queen kept more than 30 Corgis in her lifetime, making the breed a symbol of the British royal family. Today the Corgi is a social media favourite thanks to its short legs, plump rear and "bread bum". In temperament Corgis are clever, lively and loyal, but they have the stubbornness and tendency to bark of a herding dog. Note that Corgis are prone to obesity (because of their big appetite and love of food), and the long back and short legs make spinal problems likely, so weight must be controlled and jumping avoided.

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most about the Corgi

"Corgi" means "small dog" in Welsh. The Corgi originates from Wales, with a history going back 1000 years, and was originally a cattle-herding dog.

Yes! Queen Elizabeth II kept more than 30 Corgis in her lifetime, making the Corgi a symbol of the British royal family and its official breed.

The Corgi's "bread bum" (plump round rear) is their signature feature, and combined with the short legs and long back they waddle when they walk, which is especially cute.

Very much so. Corgis have big appetites and love food, and with short legs their activity is limited, so they put on weight easily — food portions must be strictly controlled.

The Corgi's long back and short legs make spinal problems (disc herniation) likely, so avoid jumping up and down from the sofa, control weight and have the joints checked regularly.
