History & origin

German Shepherd — where the breed comes from

The German Shepherd is one of the best-known working breeds in the world, originating in Germany at the end of the 19th century. In 1899 the German cavalry officer Max von Stephanitz saw a shepherd dog called Hektor at a dog show, was struck by its intelligence and working ability, bought it and founded the German Shepherd Dog Association, beginning standardised breeding.

The German Shepherd was originally a herding dog, responsible for guarding and driving flocks, and its intelligence, loyalty and obedience quickly led to other uses being found. During the two World Wars, German Shepherds served as messenger dogs, search and rescue dogs and guard dogs, and afterwards soldiers brought them back all over the world, which made the breed famous globally.

Today the German Shepherd is the working dog of choice in military and police circles, expert in drug detection, search and rescue, guarding and tracking, while also being a loyal family companion. They rank third in intelligence, behind only the Border Collie and the Poodle, with extremely strong learning ability and extreme loyalty to their owner, which is where the saying 'one dog, one master' comes from. However, German Shepherds need a great deal of exercise and mental stimulation, and need early socialisation training, so they are not suitable for complete beginners.

They are not naturally aggressive. German Shepherds are extremely loyal to their owner and gentle with family, but wary of strangers, so early socialisation training is needed.

German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia and spinal problems, because of the sloping hindquarters in the breed's conformation, so choose a reputable breeder when buying and have the joints checked regularly.
