History & origin
Although the Poodle is usually associated with France, the breed actually originates in Germany. The name Poodle comes from the German Pudeln, meaning to splash about, because Poodles began as water retrievers tasked with retrieving game from water.
Poodles come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature and Toy, one of the few breeds with this much size variation. Their classic pom-pom clip actually serves a practical purpose: the body is clipped short for easier swimming, while tufts are left over the joints and organs for warmth. In the 18th century the Poodle reached France, where its elegant looks won over the aristocracy and it became France's national dog.
The Poodle is among the smartest of all breeds (ranked second, behind only the Border Collie), with exceptional learning ability, and they can learn all kinds of commands and tricks. Their coat is curly and does not shed, which makes them a low-allergen breed and a popular choice for people sensitive to dog hair. In temperament, Poodles are intelligent, lively, loyal and affectionate, but they need enough mental stimulation or they will get up to mischief.

Frequently asked questions
The questions people ask most about the Poodle
Actually they originate in Germany. The word Poodle comes from the German Pudeln (to splash about), because Poodles began as water retrievers. They later reached France, where the aristocracy took to them, and only then were they regarded as France's national dog.
They are among the smartest, ranked second for intelligence behind only the Border Collie. Their learning ability is exceptional, and they can pick up all kinds of commands and tricks.
Hardly at all. A Poodle's coat is curly and does not shed seasonally, which is why they are considered a low-allergen breed and a good fit for people sensitive to dog hair.
Three: Standard (largest), Miniature (medium) and Toy (smallest), one of the few breeds with this much size variation.
Yes. A Poodle's curly coat keeps growing, so grooming is needed every 6-8 weeks, plus daily brushing to prevent matting. Grooming costs should be budgeted for.
