History & origin
The history of the American Shorthair is as long as the history of the United States itself. In 1620, when the Mayflower carried the Pilgrims to the New World, a few cats came aboard to deal with rodents — those cats were the ancestors of the American Shorthair.
Over the following centuries these “working cats” guarded grain in farms, warehouses and even mines, and their strong build and excellent hunting instinct made them part of the American household. In 1906 the CFA (Cat Fanciers' Association) registered them as “Domestic Shorthair”, and in 1966 the name was changed to “American Shorthair”, confirming their status as a native American breed.
The American Shorthair's most classic colour is the silver tabby: a silver-white base with black tabby markings, as if wearing a splendid fur coat. They are gentle, independent and adaptable — not overly clingy but quietly there for you — the typical “American” cat: practical, reliable, unpretentious. Because they are healthy, have few inherited diseases and live 15-20 years, they are a popular choice for first-time families.
