"Grain-free" is a formula claim, not a nutritional standard: AAFCO has no "grain-free" category, only "complete and balanced" and minimum nutrient requirements. Grain-free cat foods in Hong Kong commonly replace grains with potato, peas, lentils, sweet potato and tapioca, so grain-free does not equal low-carb. The US FDA has investigated a possible link between grain-free diets and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs, but no causal relationship has been established.
3 Key Points
- Grain-free ≠ AAFCO compliant: Check the "complete and balanced" statement separately; the two are not necessarily related.
- Grain-free ≠ low-carb: Potatoes, peas and lentils used to replace grains are also carbohydrate sources.
- Price differences are significant: For comparable formulas, grain-free versions can cost 30-90% more per kilogram (see actual prices in the table below).
What does "grain-free" mean?
- In formulation: no wheat, corn, rice, barley, oats or other grains are listed as ingredients.
- Nutritionally: AAFCO has not set any standard or definition for "grain-free", so it is a marketing term, not a nutritional grade.
- What it means for cats: Cats are obligate carnivores; the focus should be on total carbohydrate percentage and protein quality, not on "grain or no grain" itself.

What do grain-free formulas use instead of grains? Real Hong Kong product names
Below are actual product names from PetChill product pages (checked 2026-10-02), showing the replacement ingredients directly:

Comparison group (grain-inclusive):
| Product | Grain ingredient | Hong Kong price | Price per kg |
|---|---|---|---|
| NUTRIENCE Original Adult Cat Formula Chicken + Brown Rice 5.5lb | Brown rice | $205 | $82/kg |
| Hill's Kitten Can Chicken & Rice Healthy Stew 2.8oz (discontinued) | Rice | $10.5 | $133/kg |
Direct comparison: NUTRIENCE grain-inclusive adult cat food is $82/kg, versus grain-free dry foods at $147-155/kg — the grain-free versions are about 80-90% more expensive. The grain-free premium in dry food is real, but it doesn't mean the nutrition is necessarily more suitable.
Grain-free ≠ low-carb: focus on protein and fat ratios
Carbohydrate percentage can only be estimated from the complete nutritional statement (100% − protein − fat − moisture − ash). Most products in Hong Kong only list protein, fat, moisture and ash, so you can roughly estimate it yourself:
- Find the percentages for protein, fat, moisture and ash (or fibre) on the packaging.
- Add them up and subtract from 100%.
- What remains is roughly nitrogen-free extract (NFE, including carbohydrates and other components).
Example: Labelled protein 38%, fat 18%, moisture 10%, ash 8% — total 74%, leaving 26% as carbohydrate-type components (NFE). This figure has no direct relationship to "grain or no grain" — a grain-free formula can also be 26%.

FDA DCM investigation: current conclusions
- The US FDA has been investigating since 2018 a "possible link between certain diets and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs". The dietary features flagged included grain-free, and peas/lentils/potatoes listed in the top ten ingredients.
- Subsequent updates (up to 2022) stated that a causal relationship has not been established and more research is needed. The FDA also stressed that panic-driven diet changes are not warranted.
- For cats: Feline DCM is mainly linked to taurine deficiency (cats cannot synthesise enough taurine themselves), and AAFCO standards already require 0.10% (dry food) / 0.20% (canned) on a dry matter basis. So the key for cats is to confirm the product meets the standard, not just look at grain or no grain.
Which cats are suited / not suited to grain-free?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Cat has a confirmed adverse reaction to a specific grain (e.g. wheat) | Grain-free is a reasonable option, but also confirm the overall formula and AAFCO statement |
| Want to reduce carbs and increase meat proportion | Focus on protein and fat ratios, not the "grain-free" label; canned/air-dried/freeze-dried are usually more direct |
| Healthy adult cat, limited budget | No need to deliberately seek grain-free; a grain-inclusive formula meeting AAFCO standards is sufficient |
| History of urinary/kidney disease | Look at phosphorus, magnesium, sodium levels and veterinary advice; don't decide based on the grain-free label alone |
| Kittens/senior cats | Look at life-stage standards (30% protein for growth / protein quality for seniors), unrelated to grain or no grain |
